Emily Browning was left fuming after her sex scene with Jon Hamm in Sucker Punch was axed from the upcoming action movie in a bid to please U.S. censors.
The Australian beauty gets intimate with the Mad Men actor in Zack Snyder’s latest project, in which she plays a young woman who is involuntarily committed to a mental institution.
But the 22 year old was outraged after learning Snyder was forced to chop down the film after officials at the Motion Picture Association of America took offence at the racy scene.
She tells Nylon magazine, “I had a very tame and mild love scene with Jon Hamm. It was like heavy breathing and making out. It was hardly a sex scene… I think that it’s great for this young girl to actually take control of her own sexuality.
“Well, the Mpaa doesn’t like that. They don’t think a girl should ever be in control of her own sexuality because they’re from the Stone Age. I don’t know what the f**k is going on and I will openly criticise it, happily. So essentially, they got Zack to edit the scene and make it look less like she’s into it. And Zack said he edited it down to the point where it looked like he was taking advantage of her. That’s the only way he could get a Pg-13 (rating) and he said, ‘I don’t want to send that message.’ So they cut the scene!”
But the actress admits there are benefits to allowing kids under 17 to see the movie, adding, “I’m torn. I want an ‘R’ (rating) because we can get a lot of cool scenes into it, but then I like the idea of younger girls being able to see it.”

Clicking and unclicking his pen with nervous energy as he spoke, director Zack Snyder took Movieline back to the first smattering of ideas that ran through his brain when the concept for the girl-power action fantasy Sucker Punch first took root: Lobotomies. Planet of the Apes. Loss of self. The magic of music. And perhaps the most important takeaway of all from Friday’s PG-13, pop culture-mashing fever dream: the idea that, simmering beneath the film’s fantastical burlesque numbers and bloodthirsty rampages is a subversive desire to turn the tables on the very moviegoers who least expect it.

Director Zack Snyder and the cast and crew of Sucker Punch braved torrential rain and confounding street closings in Los Angeles on Sunday to talk with the press about their visually arresting ode to action, anime and girl power.

“This is the first film with a female ensemble cast where, you know, the damsels in distress become their own heroes and save themselves,” said Jamie Chung, who plays Amber. “That’s very empowering.”

Written with Steve Shibuya, Sucker Punch is Snyder’s first wholly original film (Dawn of the Dead, 300, Watchmen and Legend of the Guardians were based on other works). It centers on Baby Doll (Emily Browning), a young woman who retreats into a fantasy world to escape the horrors of a mental institution. Navigating around the villainous orderly Blue (Oscar Isaac) and the enigmatic Madam Gorski (Carla Gugino), Baby Doll discovers four allies to help in her desperate plot to escape.
